Packing List: Thailand and Cambodia in June

Intro

When I think of packing for summer weather, all I can think of is shorts and tank tops -- seems pretty easy, right? Not for this trip. Because of the importance of modesty in Asian culture and the dress code for temples, you need to pack your clothing strategically to keep your body both covered and cool. Do you need help figuring out what to bring on your trip to Thailand during the summer? Keep reading!

Weather

We went on our trip in June which was during the hot and humid summers months. I read a lot of blogs saying how miserable the weather can be while visiting during the summer months can be. Temperatures were between 80-95 degrees (plus humidity) and there was usually a chance of rain. Coming from the southern half of the United States, I didn’t think it was that bad.

Luggage

We both brought a carry-on sized backpack and a small personal backpack for this trip. We were hopping on and off so many planes with short connecting times that waiting for a bag could have caused us to miss a flight. It also saved money to not check a bag.

  • Carry-on backpack: Here is mine and here is the one Rebecca took.

  • Personal item backpack: I brought a Kavu Rope Bag and Rebecca brought her go-to Osprey backpack she uses at home.

  • Packing cubes: I love packing cubes! This one is double-sided for your clean and dirty clothes. Rebecca uses these on our trips and loves them!

  • Toiletry bag: This one works well when using shared bathrooms.

Packing List

Outer Layers

  • Rain jacket

  • Light jacket or pullover (for the chilly flights)

Tops

  • Blouses or t-shirts: When you go into temples, you will need shirts that cover your shoulders. I bought a few cute blouse-type shirts and a few dri-fit shirts that were breathable in the hot weather.

  • Tank tops: These were to wear on the boat excursions in Phuket and for the elephant trainer day.

  • Bathing suits and a coverup

Bottoms

  • Linen pants: These work great to wear to the temples or to wear to dinner at night.

  • Athletic tights: Make sure wear ones that keep you cool like these.

  • Flowy skirt

  • Athletic shorts: These are to wear with the tank tops when you are around water.

Feet

  • Tennis shoes: With how much walking we were doing, we went with comfort over fashion. We both wore a pair of Nike shoes during the day.

  • Dress sandals: I brought a pair from Target to wear when we went out to dinner.

  • Waterproof sandals: Chacos worked well during our time with the elephants, kayaking, and as shower sandals in the hostels.

Accessories

  • Sunglasses

  • Headband: When our hair isn’t working with us, we love a good Buff.

Technology

  • Travel Adapter: I brought my travel adapter, but I don’t remember ever using it.

  • Portable charger: With all the planes, cars, and tuk-tuks you might find yourself in, it’s convenient to have a portable charger with you in you can’t sit close to an outlet.

Extras

  • Upset stomach medicine: I always bring something like this on every trip just in case.

  • Sunscreen: I loved traveling with this bar of sunscreen.

  • Travel towel: For the water activities and hostels, this is a great one to pack.

  • Waterproof phone case: We were able to take pictures with our iPhone while we snorkeled with this case.

  • Small dry bag: We brought a small dry bag to keep our things safe on our boating excursions and to also pack our wet clothes in while traveling.

Real Talk: We read that mosquitoes were really bad in Thailand and how they can carry scary diseases. Looking at the list of everything we did, did we go overboard? Maybe. Do I ever remember mosquitoes being a problem? No, I don’t.

That’s it!

I hope this was helpful as you are trying to pack for your trip to Thailand!
